A Slight Twist on Yglesias' Defense of Massive Deficits

Bob Roddis tipped me off to this Yglesias post defending the massive spending contained in the Obama forecast:
[B]y definition some level of deficits has to be “the biggest deficit since World War II.” What we have right now is the most [severe] global downturn since World War II. That seems to me like a perfectly reasonable candidate for biggest deficit since World War II. What would be a better time?
A "better time" for the government to borrow $1.8 trillion would be a year in which Americans were awash in surplus savings, and had just discovered that their homes and stock portfolios were worth twice as much as they thought only two years in the past.

Hey I can play this game too. I think we should round up 85% of all Japanese Americans into internment camps. Can you guess why?

Gotta catch 'em (almost) all?

"Gotta catch 'em (almost) all?"

Pokemon! Gotta catch 'em all! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAn6So9tURU

" I think we should round up 85% of all Japanese Americans into internment camps."

Wouldn't it be better to round 'em up, herd 'em into the desert in Nevada, and then drop a nuke on 'em? Duke Nuke 'Em!!

I like the way he confuses debt with deficits and "rack" with "wrack".
But I love the way almost all of the commenters tear him a new one. Has he learned nothing from Brad DeLong?

" Hey I can play this game too. I think we should round up 85% of all Japanese Americans into internment camps. Can you guess why?"

Ummm I dunno.......

Bukkake?

Joustsco,

Sorry, nothing more clever than, "This would be the biggest roundup of Japanese Americans into internment camps, since World War II." It would serve no purpose, of course, but then again neither does deficit spending help an economy escape recession.

Hm ... do 85% of Japanese Americans live on the coast?

Silas asked,

Hm ... do 85% of Japanese Americans live on the coast?

How much does the IPCC say sea levels will rise by 2100 under business-as-usual? I forget the exact number, can you remind us?

Enough to flood out 85% of Japanese Americans :-O

"How much does the IPCC say sea levels will rise by 2100 under business-as-usual? I forget the exact number, can you remind us?"

even if they rise a lot by 2100 and flood, wouldn't they survive? japanese subsist mainly on sushi, which is raw fish, so they would be able to survive even on water. there would have to be alternative ways of removing or eliminating them.

Waiting for an uppity leftist to show up to point out the subtle racism evident in the various responses to this post...

...then, months from now, these comments (from random responders) will be cited as the right-wing racism of Murphy (something Silas has known of all along, as Murphy only doesn't care about GW-induced coastal flooding because it'll only affect yellow and brown men). Also, Bob's post will be taken out of context and selectively quoted, something akin to, "No one listens to those racist Austrian crypto-fascists, like Bob Murphy, who once said he 'would like to round up 85% of Japanese-Americans and put them in internment camps.' Racist, bigoted white trash filth."

Just you wait...

Taylor, I do believe your comment is a relatively solid insurance policy against Mr. Murphy and the commentators being grossly misinterpreted.
