An Old Argument on Austrian Strategy
Over at The Austrian Economists, Greg Ransom and I (plus some others) are arguing with Pete Boettke about the best way for Austrian economists to advance the school. I wisely said last night that I would be making my last post, so now honor forbids me from correcting the latest posts from Boettke (and now Roger Koppl) demanding an answer. Ah well, it's probably all for the best. For sure the way NOT to advance Austrian economics is to devote more than one hour to a single thread on TAE.
Comments:
I'm going to repost my comment here:
I think Pete and Bob are both right. If you can popularize an economic science on the grassroots level, like Ron Paul/LRC are doing, it will get greater exposure in future academics circles.
I wonder how many future Austrian economists Ron Paul and blogs like these are creating? Take a look at this site: yaliberty.org. I happen to write for this blog as well as many other young Americans interested in Austrian economics and economic liberty. These people will be going on to graduate schools in economics and political science. Perhaps even at the top schools.
Peter - please keep trying to advance the field intellectually now, and it'll make it a much smoother transition for the next generation. If nothing else, the upcoming crop of grad students needs its thesis mentors to get started.
As the Ron Paul supporters say, there's a revolution brewing (helped along by Robert Murphy, for sure) but it's an intellectual one in addition to a political one.

And here is Ron Paul doing his part this morning. It's glorious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUQo5QQSlys
I think when it comes to strategy it is very easy to be "too clever by half".
It is quite possible that accommodation to view points will be interpreted as concessions to those view points and thus weaken the standing of austrian economics rather than strengthen it.
I think it wisest simply to make the soundest arguments your talent allows and not worry yourself with the type of people who requires their ego's flattered before they give an opposing view a second glance.

Has an international focus ever been tried? For example, should professional economists volunteer their services to some sad sack 3rd world country. Surely a country wracked by inflation would be more open to a gold standard or peg. If a practical demonstration of the positive effects of Austrian thought could be achieved maybe the whole world might take it a little more seriously.
